Letters to a young photographer, 1

From my journal of 13 November 2000

For me, photography began with a fascination with the people I knew, my friends, the amazing experiences we were having and that continues to be true and that is enough. Some of my favorite photographers have made their entire careers just photographing their friends, making photos out of love. Worrying about technical aspects and career stuff just kept me from actually doing the work. The boxes of photos I have in the basement are my initial training. All the years I simply took photos of people/places/things I care about. You can have all the technical precision in the world but if you aren’t taken by what you see and cannot enjoy just standing and waiting for the light to change, then your photos will be cold, clinical, unemotional.
